5 Different Options For Keeping Ticks Off Your Dogs

by Reginald Ruiz

Even if you don't live out in the woods, you are still going to need to protect your pets against ticks. Ticks can be present in urban as well as rural environments. There are lots of ways to protect your dog against pets; the key is to find the right tick prevention method for you and your dog.

Spot Treatment

One of the most common types of treatment for keeping ticks off your dog is spot treatment. Spot treatment is a type of medication that you put directly on your pet's skin to keep ticks at bay. This type of medication is often applied to your dog's ear area, neck, and underbelly.

There are a wide variety of different spot-treatments on the market that have different degrees of potency. Talk with your vet to determine which spot treatment is best for your type of dog. This method is generally really effective once you find the right spot-on treatment for your specific dog.

Shampoos

Another way to protect your dog from ticks is by using shampoo that is designed to fight ticks. These shampoos are designed to kill the ticks on your dog's body at the time when you bathe your dog. The shampoo also provides some mild protection against ticks in between each bath, but you have to give your dog regular baths for this protection method to work. It is more labor and time involved than other tick prevention methods.

Oral Medication

There are oral medications that you can give your dog as well. Oral medications can help fight back against both ticks and fleas at the same time. This tick prevention method works best if your dog will take oral medications. Some dogs seem averse to oral medications, and will find a way to spit them out even if you hide them in their foods; for dogs like this, oral medications to prevent ticks may not be the best method.

Tick Collars

You can also put a tick collar on your pet. Collars are really great at keeping ticks and fleas away from your pet's head and neck area. They are great as well because they usually work for a few months, and they function as a regular collar.

You have to make sure that you don't put the collar on too tight. You also should be aware that tick collars do not protect your dog's entire body; they provided targeted protection against ticks on your dog's head and neck area.

Lyme Vaccine

Finally, one of the best things you can do for your dog if you live in an area with lots of ticks is to make sure that your dog gets the lyme vaccine. The lyme vaccine will protect your dog against one of the worst diseases that ticks spread: lyme disease.

No matter where you live, you should make sure that you protect your pet against ticks. Ticks can carry disease that can be harmful to you and your pets, so make sure that you find a way to protect your dog from ticks.
